Famous Photographer Report: Joe McNally
Joe McNally is a renowned American photographer that has received many awards and has shot assignments in nearly 70 countries. McNally was born on July 27, 1952 in Montclair, New Jersey. His first camera was his father’s Beauty Lite 3. He currently resides in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his wife and his cat Sammy. He is currently based out of New York City. He is an alumni of Syracuse University where he he took journalism and was required to take photography. He then stayed for 2 years and got his masters in photojournalism at the newhouse school of journalism.
Since 1987, McNally has been a national geographic photographer. From 1994 to 1998, he became a LIFE magazine staff photographer, the first one in 23 years, and he was the solo staff photographer for LIFE as well. He is also a Nikon USA ambassador. He has also done cover shoots and assignments for many famous companies and magazines, like FedEx, ESPN, Adidas, Sony, and the New York Stock Exchange. He is one of the few photographers that bridged the commercial world of photography with the journalism side, shooting for both advertisements as well as magazines and exhibits and photography projects.
Some of Joe McNally’s most famous projects includes “faces of ground zero — portraits of the heroes of september 11”. This is a collection of life-size polaroids shot 3 weeks after the events of 9/11, near the world trade center cite. This collection included many portraits of the first responders that had to deal with the aftermath of 9/11, like paramedics, firemen and other people that had to live through it. This helped to raise over 2 million dollars for 9/11 relief efforts. In 2003, Joe McNally also did the first all digital photoshoot with national geography titled the future of flight. It was the 100th anniversary of the wright brothers’ first flight, the first record of airplanes. The photoshoot was a very big success and was one of national geographic’s most successful cover shoots.
Joe McNally currently has an online following of more than half a million and has published many books on amazon’s best selling list. He prefers to use speedlights, or smaller flashlight instead of large studio strobes. His most used lens is a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8. He is still an active photographer, but he is not willing to sign many of them and has walked away from much work. He is now more focused on his wife Annie.
