The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling is a fantasy written in third person omniscient. The book is about a boy named John Midas who loved chocolate. He would have a piece everyday, but he didnt think how much that could affect him, or the people around him.The chocolate Touch took place at school. The book says on page, 59 it says, “When John finally got back to his classroom, all the other pupils were bent over their tables, busily scratching away.” This means that the students were at school working in the assignment. This setting is important because John goes through alot at school, he turns a coin, his pencil, his trumpet, and his food into chocolate. All in that same day people were teasing him about what was happening to him. John Midas the main character is a sweet boy who doesn’t break the rules. Most of the time. In the book they also had Miss Plimosle, She was John’s teacher. Just like john Miss Plimsole was very kind. There was also John’s best friend Susan, Susan was also very kind and she and John would play together everyday and she also had a birthday and he went to that but ended up turning the water into chocolate and it got everywhere. The conflict in the story is that john loved chocolate but when he was on his was to Susan’s house and he found a coin with his initials on it. When he picked it up he realized he was taking a left where he should be taking a right. Well He found a candy shop and walked in it and asked the man if he could get anything with his coin that he found. The man responded, “In fact it’s the only kind of money i accept. But i don’t suppose you want to spend it on a box-” . John opened it when his mom was not around, and found only one piece of chocolate in the bow. John ate the candy but when he woke up the next morning, everything he put in his mouth turned into chocolate. Well it was only until he kissed his mom on the check and turned her into chocolate when he ran back to the shop and asked the man to take back and he did. The message the author is trying to convey is that John was being so greedy that he didn’t care what happened to other people. So when john rushed into to fix what happened to his mom the store keeper was glade. John was worried about someone else before thinking about himself. This book was a very good book because it teaches the readers a lesson about caring for other. I would recommend this book to my sister because she cares for herself.
